Rimmel (commonly known as Rimmel London) is a cosmetics brand, now owned by Coty, Inc. The House of Rimmel was originally founded by Eugene Rimmel in 1834 in Regent Street, London, England. Eugene Rimmel was a French-born British perfumer and businessman who had been responsible for manufacturing and marketing some of the earliest commercially made cosmetics. Born in France, Eugene Rimmel soon moved to London after his father had accepted an invitation to manage a perfumery on Bond Street. Once Eugene was old enough he started an apprentice with his father and in 1834 he opened his own perfumery, the House of Rimmel. By the age of 24 Eugene was an immensely talented perfumer and cosmetics innovator. He contributed greatly to the concept of hygiene and bathing which led him to be considered to be quite a trailblazer to the beauty and healthcare industries. His most innovative invention may well be the first commercial non-toxic mascara, which became so popular that "Rimmel" is to this day the word for "mascara" in several languages. He was also involved in the first development of mouth rinses, scented pomades and as well as his signature “toilet vinegar”.
